Cape Krusenstern National Monument

Cape Krusenstern National Monument is a protected coastal area on Alaska’s northwest Arctic coast, established in 1978 and notable for its long beach‑ridge complex and extensive archaeological record.

The monument’s defining feature is a broad beach‑ridge plain made up of more than 100 successive ridges that preserve thousands of years of shoreline change and human occupation. The coastal plain supports tundra, river deltas, and seabird colonies and is used seasonally for subsistence hunting and fishing.

The area has been used by Native Alaskan peoples for millennia; modern protection was created to conserve the archaeological sites and natural coastal systems. It was designated as a national monument in 1978 to protect both cultural and natural resources.

The monument lies along the Chukchi Sea and Kotzebue Sound on Alaska’s northwest coast, north of the Seward Peninsula and north of the regional hub of Kotzebue. The landscape is remote tundra and coastline with no road connections.

• Access: Access is by small plane or boat only; there are no roads into the monument and services are minimal.
• Archaeology: The beach-ridge plain preserves an archaeological record extending more than 5,000 years, with dozens of recorded sites used by Iñupiat ancestors.
