Cape Floral Region Protected Areas
Nature Reserve Biodiverse floral kingdom with high plant endemism
Western Cape’s Cape Floral Region protects fynbos and thousands of endemic plant species; visitors come for botanical research, wildflower displays, hiking reserves such as Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch, and scenic drives.
A natural World Heritage property in South Africa’s Western Cape, the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas encompass a mosaic of protected reserves that conserve the globally unique fynbos biome and its very high plant diversity.
The region is valued for its plant diversity and endemic species rather than single monuments; many reserves offer hiking trails, coastal scenery and botanical interest with large numbers of proteas, ericas and restios. Landscapes range from coastal cliffs and dunes to low mountain ranges and montane plateaus, with seasonal floral displays that attract botanists and nature visitors.
These are natural sites without a single founding event; the present vegetation assemblages developed over geological time under Mediterranean-type climate conditions. Areas have been managed as nature reserves and national parks and more recently brought together as a World Heritage property to protect the floristic diversity and endemic species.
The protected areas are concentrated around the southwestern tip of South Africa in the Western Cape province, centred on and around the Cape Town region and extending along nearby mountain ranges and coastal sectors of the Cape Peninsula and adjacent districts.
- Best time to see wildflowers: Spring (August to October in the Southern Hemisphere) produces the most spectacular displays of flowering fynbos across many reserves within the region.
- Biodiversity value: The area contains an exceptionally high diversity of flowering plants, with several thousand vascular plant species and a very high level of endemism concentrated in fynbos vegetation.
