Cape Cod National Seashore is a U.S. National Park unit on the outer arm of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, established by Congress in 1961 to preserve barrier beaches, dunes, marshes and historic sites along the Atlantic coast. The park protects roughly 40 miles of shoreline on the outer Cape.

Sandy beaches, dune-backed trails and salt marshes are the main attractions, together with historic lighthouses, visitor centers and interpretive programs. Popular recreational activities include swimming, hiking, bicycling on mapped trails, birdwatching and beachcombing.

The seashore encompasses distinct districts and overlooks that include the Province Lands, Nauset and Coast Guard beaches, and Race Point at the northern tip, each offering different landscapes and access points for visitors.

Created in 1961 to conserve natural coastal systems and scenic values, the seashore also contains historic structures and maritime sites reflecting the century-scale coastal use of the Cape. Management emphasizes both public access and habitat protection.

The park stretches along the outer shore of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, extending from near Chatham up to Provincetown; it lies about 70 to 100 miles southeast of Boston depending on the access point.

  • Establishment and scale: Established by Congress in 1961, the seashore protects roughly 40 miles of outer Cape coastline and extensive dune, marsh, and barrier beach systems.
  • Visiting seasons: Best visiting times are late spring through early fall for beach access and trail use; portions of the seashore remain open year-round for birding and off-season walking.

How to Get to Cape Cod National Seashore #

The Seashore is a linear park running from Provincetown in the north to Chatham in the south on Cape Cod. From Boston, drive via US‑Route 6 (the Mid‑Cape Highway) - expect 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic. Provincetown is served by seasonal ferries from Boston and Plymouth; summer bus service (Peter Pan, Plymouth & Brockton) also reaches the Cape. On the Cape itself, park roads and local shuttle services connect major Seashore sites (Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham, Province Lands in Provincetown, Marconi Station in Wellfleet). Detailed transit and parking guidance is on the NPS site (https://www.nps.gov/caco).

Tips for Visiting Cape Cod National Seashore #

  • Arrive before 8am in summer for the quieter beaches - Coast Guard Beach in Eastham fills fast.
  • Use the seasonal Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority shuttles (often called the 'P-town/Provincetown shuttles' or local summer shuttles) to avoid parking headaches at National Seashore lots.
  • Check tide charts before walking the Provincetown shorelines - incoming tides can trap unwary beachcombers against the dunes.
  • Visit Highland Light early or late in the day: the lighthouse offers lens tours that sell out and the bluff is subject to seasonal erosion and closures.
