Cape Coast Castle
Castle Historic coastal fortress and former transatlantic slave trade site
On Ghana’s central coast, Cape Coast Castle offers guided tours of its dungeons and museum interpreting the transatlantic slave trade; visitors also explore the town and fishing harbour.
Cape Coast Castle is a 17th-century coastal fort in Cape Coast, Central Region, Ghana, built and expanded by European colonial powers and long used in the Atlantic slave trade. It is one of the largest and most historically significant slave castles on the West African coast.
The castle’s main highlights are the vaulted slave dungeons beneath the courtyard and the restored governor’s rooms now housing exhibits. Visitors also see cannons and battlements facing the Atlantic and an interpretive museum of artifacts and documents relating to the transatlantic slave trade. The site is commonly included on heritage and remembrance routes along the central coast.
Construction and modification of the castle took place from the mid-17th century onward under successive European occupiers, with major rebuilding and expansions in later centuries as it served as a trading and administrative fort. After Ghana’s independence the site was preserved and converted into a museum under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.
The castle sits on the shoreline in the center of Cape Coast town, overlooking the Gulf of Guinea. It is within walking distance of the town center and the main coastal road that links the chain of forts along Ghana’s Central Region coast.
