Cape Ann
Cape Rocky Massachusetts peninsula with historic fishing towns
Cape Ann on Massachusetts’ North Shore includes Gloucester and Rockport, working fishing ports and rocky granite coastlines; visitors arrive for seafood, art studios, coastal drives and whale‑watching departures.
Cape Ann is a rocky peninsula on the northeastern coast of Massachusetts that includes the towns of Gloucester and Rockport and a long maritime history. The area is known for its fishing fleet, coastal quarries and active arts communities.
Visitors go for working harbors and seafood, scenic coastal headlands, recreational boating and seasonal whale-watching departures from the area. Rockport and Gloucester both feature galleries, shoreline walks and access to exposed granite ledges and small beaches used for viewing the Atlantic.
European colonization and maritime development in the 17th and 18th centuries established Cape Ann as an early fishing and shipbuilding center; granite quarrying and later tourism shaped the 19th- and 20th-century economy. The maritime tradition and fishing fleet remain important to the local identity.
Cape Ann projects into the Atlantic Ocean northeast of the city of Boston on Massachusetts’ North Shore, forming a distinctive rocky coastal promontory with harbors, beaches and headlands.
- Major towns: The peninsula includes the towns of Gloucester and Rockport and is a long-established center for fishing, boatbuilding and coastal tourism.

- Gloucester Harbor: Gloucester Harbor - a working fishing port and historic maritime center with waterfront facilities, fisheries activity and whale-watching departures.
- Halibut Point / Quarry area: Halibut Point State Park - coastal granite ledges, trails and a former quarry now managed for recreation and coastal views (in Rockport).

Tips for Visiting Cape Ann #
- Arrive early in the morning for calmer seas and the best light on the coastal granite and fishing harbors-sunrise is especially good for photography.
- Visit mid‑week or in the shoulder seasons (spring, autumn) to avoid the heavy weekend and summer tourist traffic that concentrates in Gloucester and Rockport.
- Use the coastal loop (Route 127) to move between viewpoints and villages rather than trying to park at the busiest spots-this lets you pick quieter pullovers for short walks and vistas.
