Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Park Canyon landscape containing Navajo cultural sites and ruins
Canyon de Chelly National Monument on Navajo land combines dramatic sandstone canyons, ancestral Puebloan ruins and Navajo farming communities; tourists take guided Jeep or walking tours to see ruins and learn local history from Navajo guides.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a nationally protected landscape in northeastern Arizona notable for its broad canyon system, sandstone cliffs, and long human occupation. It contains important Navajo cultural sites and well-preserved ancestral Puebloan ruins.
The canyon has been occupied for thousands of years by ancestral Puebloan peoples and later by the Navajo; numerous cliff dwellings and rock art attest to prolonged human use. The area was designated a national monument in the early 20th century and management today is a cooperative arrangement recognizing Navajo sovereignty and cultural traditions.
The monument is located in northeastern Arizona near the town of Chinle, within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation, in a remote high-desert landscape east of the Navajo Mountain region.
- Access rules: Canyon de Chelly is on Navajo Nation land and is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the Navajo people; most canyon-floor access requires a guided Navajo tour.
- Visitor logistics: The park headquarters and visitor services are based in Chinle, Arizona, which is the nearest town for supplies and lodging.
What to See #
- Spider Rock: A prominent sandstone spire rising from the canyon floor, culturally significant to the Navajo and visible from several rim overlooks; the taller of the two Spider Rock spires reaches roughly 750 feet in height.
- White House Ruin and other Puebloan sites: Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings and archaeological sites, including the well-known White House Ruin, visible from rim overlooks and within the canyon landscape.
- Rim overlooks and drives: Rim drives and overlooks on the north and south rims provide panoramic views across the canyon and access to interpretive signs and pullouts along paved roads near Chinle.
Tips for Visiting Canyon de Chelly National Monument #
- Start at the Canyon de Chelly Visitor Center in Chinle and plan any interior canyon visits through an authorized Navajo guide-access to the canyon floor and ruin sites requires a guided tour on Navajo Nation land.
- Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light on Spider Rock and the canyon walls; midday light is flat and parking/turnouts are busiest.
- Don't skip the lesser‑visited North Rim overlooks if you want quieter vistas; the South Rim (near the visitor center) draws the largest crowds, so alternate rims to avoid congestion.
