Canvey Island
Island Essex island with reclaimed marshland and seaside town
In the Thames Estuary, Canvey Island offers promenades, saltmarshes and watersports; weekend visitors explore seaside cafés, local maritime history and reclaimed-land promenades.
Canvey Island is a reclaimed, low-lying island in the Thames Estuary in Essex, England. It is noted for its prominent sea defenses and its experience of severe flooding during the North Sea flood of 1953.
The island offers a short coastal promenade and beaches along its southern shore, simple seaside amenities and local cafes. Inland there are green spaces and community-run attractions, while naturalists visit the reclaimed-wetland nature area for its uncommon invertebrate and plant communities.
Large parts of the island were reclaimed from marsh and developed over centuries for agriculture and settlement; industrial and residential development increased in the 19th and 20th centuries. The 1953 North Sea flood caused major damage and loss of life on the island and prompted major upgrades to the island’s sea walls and flood defenses.
Canvey Island lies in the Thames Estuary off the Essex coast, connected to the mainland by road and causeway; it sits south of Benfleet and east of the coastal mainland, about 30 miles (roughly 50 km) east of central London.
- Sea defences and flood history: Extensive sea defenses were rebuilt and strengthened after the North Sea flood of 1953, and a flood memorial marks that event on the island.
- Canvey Wick reserve: A small but internationally noted nature reserve on reclaimed land supports rare invertebrates and wildflowers and is popular with wildlife-watchers.
What to See #
- Canvey Wick: A lowland nature area on the island's eastern side designated for its uncommon post-industrial grassland and invertebrate communities; accessible by footpaths and managed as a conservation reserve.
- Seafront and promenade: A paved seafront promenade, beaches and recreational facilities running along the island's southern shore, with car parks and local cafes close to the seawall.
- Benfleet Creek: A tidal creek separating the island from the Essex mainland that creates estuarine habitats and is visible from several coastal viewpoints on the island.
How to Get to Canvey Island #
