Canterbury Museum is a major regional museum in Christchurch, New Zealand, with extensive natural history, cultural and Antarctic-related collections and exhibitions. The institution dates from the 19th century and occupies heritage buildings beside the city’s Botanic Gardens.

The Canterbury Museum is on Rolleston Avenue adjacent to the Botanic Gardens in central Christchurch. Take any Metro bus that serves the central city / Bus Exchange or get off at Cathedral Square and walk about 5-10 minutes along Rolleston Avenue to the museum.

From Christchurch Airport it’s roughly a 12 km drive to the city centre (about 15-20 minutes by car); follow the main road into the central city and park nearby.

• Aim for the museum when it opens on a weekday morning to avoid school groups that arrive later and to give yourself time to visit the adjacent Christchurch Botanic Gardens in one trip.
• Use the museum entrance facing Rolleston Avenue/Botanic Gardens so you can move easily between galleries and the outdoor displays; many visitors miss the lower-level Antarctic and regional history displays, which reward a dedicated 30-45 minute visit.
