Cañón La Huasteca

Cañón La Huasteca is a limestone canyon and recreational area in the municipality of Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, Mexico, within the Sierra Madre Oriental. It is a primary outdoor destination for the Monterrey metropolitan area and a regional center for rock climbing.

The canyon features steep rock walls and narrow valleys that attract climbers, via ferrata users, hikers, and mountain bikers. Climbing sectors vary in difficulty and vertical exposure, and there are multiple trailheads and short technical routes through the canyon. Picnic and day-use areas near the main access points support short visits and day trips.

The canyon is a product of erosion in the Sierra Madre Oriental and has long been used by local residents for grazing and recreation before becoming an organized municipal park and recreational area. Management and signage have increased access and safety for outdoor users in recent decades.

The canyon sits immediately west of Monterrey in Santa Catarina, forming part of the rugged hills that border the metropolitan area. Access is commonly from the Carretera Nacional and local roads into the park; travel time from downtown Monterrey is typically on the order of tens of minutes depending on traffic and the chosen entrance.
