Cannae
Archaeological Site Ancient Apulian town, site of the Battle of Cannae
Near the Ofanto River in Apulia, Cannae draws history-minded visitors to its ancient battlefield site, archaeological remains and museums recounting the 216 BC clash between Hannibal and Rome.
Cannae is an archaeological site in Apulia, southern Italy, famous as the location of the Battle of Cannae in 216 BC during the Second Punic War. The engagement there is one of antiquity’s best-known battles, where Hannibal’s forces inflicted a decisive defeat on a much larger Roman army.
Today the area comprises an archaeological park and local museum that interpret the battlefield, with visible earthworks and finds from Roman and earlier periods. The landscape is a low, open plain near a small watercourse where the battle formations were deployed.
In antiquity the site was an inhabited settlement and a strategic crossing point in the region; the 216 BC battle remains the site’s principal historical event and the reason for its ongoing archaeological interest. Over time the site has been surveyed and partially excavated by archaeologists studying Roman and Carthaginian military history.
Cannae lies in northern Apulia near the Ofanto river, in a rural area of southern Italy not far from coastal towns on the Adriatic.
