Cancho Roano
Archaeological Site Pre-Roman archaeological site with unique temple complex
Cancho Roano in Extremadura is an archaeological sanctuary with excavated timber-and-earth structures and an on-site visitor centre interpreting pre-Roman ritual architecture.
Cancho Roano is an archaeological complex in Extremadura, Spain, near the town of Zalamea de la Serena. It is a pre-Roman ritual or ceremonial site dated to the Iron Age and the immediate pre-Roman period.
The remains include a central rectangular building within an enclosed compound, visible mudbrick wall foundations and internal partitioning; the layout and finds indicate ritual deposits and structured access. The site is presented for visitors with pathways and interpretation panels describing excavated architecture and artefacts.
Excavations by Spanish archaeologists in the late 20th century exposed the plan and a sequence of deposits that identified its use as a sanctuary or ritual complex in the pre-Roman centuries. Finds recovered during excavation helped date the site and clarify its function within regional prehistory.
The site sits in central Extremadura within the province of Badajoz, amid farmland and rolling dehesa landscape, accessible from local roads serving Zalamea de la Serena.
- Location: Located near the village of Zalamea de la Serena in Badajoz province, set in a rural agricultural landscape
