Camino Real de Tierra Adentro

The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro is a historic overland route that connected the political and commercial centres of central New Spain with northern frontier settlements, running north from Mexico City into present-day New Mexico. The route facilitated movement of people, goods and ideas over centuries and shaped urban and rural development along its corridor.

The route comprises a succession of roads, plazas, bridges, missions, haciendas and waystations that together supported long-distance travel and commerce. Along its length are urban centres, mining towns and rural settlements that served as logistical and administrative hubs for traffic on the corridor.

The Camino Real was established and used from the early colonial period in the 16th century through the 19th century as part of Spanish imperial and later Mexican networks; it contributed to economic integration, missionary activity and the spread of agricultural and mining enterprises into northern territories.

The historic corridor passes through multiple Mexican states including Zacatecas and continues north into present-day United States territory; the nominated components are dispersed along the long inland route rather than concentrated in a single locality.
