Calixtlahuaca

Calixtlahuaca is a pre-Hispanic archaeological site in the State of Mexico associated with the Matlatzinca cultural sphere, notable for a prominent circular temple. The exposed ruins include plazas, platforms and ceremonial architecture reflecting regional Late Postclassic settlement patterns.

Visitors encounter platform mounds, a main plaza and a conspicuous round temple interpreted as a shrine to the wind deity tradition. The site is compact and consists of stone foundations and low platform walls rather than large intact pyramids.

Calixtlahuaca was an occupied urban centre in the pre-Hispanic period and continued to be significant into the Late Postclassic before the Spanish colonial period. Archaeological study and conservation have focused on its public architecture and ceremonial spaces.

The site is located in the Toluca Valley region of the State of Mexico, within the upland basin west of Mexico City and within the broader cultural landscape of central Mexico.
