Călimani Mountains
Mountains Volcanic mountain range in eastern Carpathians
A volcanic chain in the Eastern Carpathians offering rugged peaks, forested slopes and alpine meadows; hikers come for day treks, long ridgelines and seasonal wildflowers.
The Călimani Mountains are a volcanic mountain range in the Eastern Carpathians of Romania, notable for rugged plateaus and steep ridges. The highest summit, Pietrosu, reaches roughly 2,100 meters.
Hiking, ridge walks and alpine meadows are the main attractions, with forests of mixed montane species on the lower slopes and open, rocky terrain nearer the peaks. The area contains volcanic landforms and glacial cirques that draw outdoor recreation and nature study.
Volcanic activity in the Neogene and Quaternary created the range’s characteristic cones and plateaus; erosion and glaciation later shaped the higher land into cirques and valleys. The mountains have long been used for forestry, pasture and seasonal grazing as well as modern outdoor recreation.
Geographically the Călimani sit in northern-central Romania within the Eastern Carpathians, spanning parts of several counties and forming a transition between Transylvania and the regions to the north and east. The landscape is a mix of forested slopes, alpine meadows and volcanic ridgelines.
