Calanais Stones
Archaeological Site Neolithic stone circle and ritual Bronze Age site
On Lewis, the Calanais Stones form a Neolithic stone circle and alignments inland of lochs. Visitors come for archaeology, guided interpretation and the windswept peatland around the monument.
The Calanais Stones are a Neolithic stone complex on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, constructed around 2900-2600 BCE. It is one of the best-preserved megalithic sites in Scotland and is noted for its stone circle and radiating avenues.
The principal feature is a central stone circle with a cross-shaped pattern of standing stones and avenues radiating outward; the main circle includes thirteen erect stones. The arrangement creates clear sightlines across the moor and is frequently photographed at dawn and dusk.
Constructed in the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age, the site is interpreted as having ritual and possibly astronomical functions and has been conserved and studied by archaeologists in modern times. It remained a local landmark through centuries of Hebridean settlement.
Located on the west side of the Isle of Lewis, the stones lie about 13 kilometres west of Stornoway and are accessed by road from the island’s main settlement.
- Best time to visit: The site is most dramatic at sunrise or sunset when low light accentuates the standing stones and alignments.
- Visitor facilities: An on-site visitor centre offers context and displays and sits adjacent to the monument; the monument is a short drive from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.
What to See #
- Calanais I (main circle): Central stone setting composed of a roughly circular arrangement with a suite of radiating rows and an avenue; the main circle contains thirteen standing stones.
- Visitor centre: Interpretation centre beside the site providing exhibitions about the archaeology, guided walks and visitor information.
How to Get to Calanais Stones #
The Calanais (Callanish) standing stones are on the Isle of Lewis. From Stornoway drive west/southwest on the A858 following signs for Calanais/Callanish; there is a visitor car park adjacent to the site and a short, level walk from the car park to the stones. Seasonal local buses from Stornoway also serve the Callanish area.
Tips for Visiting Calanais Stones #
- Aim for sunrise or late afternoon for dramatic light and far fewer day‑tour buses; mid‑day is when coaches from Stornoway and tours converge and the site gets busiest.
- Use the small visitor car park and paths off the A858 at Callanish rather than parking by the roadside-follow the signposted route to the main circle and then walk the surrounding fields to see the outlying rows and secondary stones that most visitors miss.
- Visit the nearby Callanish Visitor Centre to get context before entering the circle; many people treat the stones as a single monument but the wider ritual landscape becomes obvious once you take the short walks around the site.
Best Time to Visit Calanais Stones #
Late spring through early autumn (especially June-September) offers the best conditions and longest daylight for visiting the stones.
