Calakmul is an ancient Maya city and archaeological zone deep in the tropical forests of Campeche, Mexico, notable for its large scale and monumental pyramids. It is set within the protected Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and is a key Maya research and tourism site.
Visitors encounter massive temple pyramids that protrude above the forest canopy, broad plazas and a dense archaeological landscape of mounds and platforms. Walking trails and lookout platforms offer views over the ruins and the surrounding forest; wildlife sightings are also common within the reserve.
A major Classic-period Maya political center, Calakmul was an influential city-state with extensive carved monuments and large architectural complexes. Excavations and archaeological work have documented its role in regional Maya politics and urban development.
