Cairn Toul
Mountain Munro mountain in the Cairngorms, high summit
A remote Cairngorms summit, Cairn Toul ranks among Scotland’s highest Munros and demands full-day routes from Cairn Gorm ski area or Coire an t-Sneachda. Walkers tackle long ridges, plateaus, and winter mountaineering challenges.
Cairn Toul is a mountain in the Cairngorms of Scotland standing 1,291 metres above sea level. It is one of the highest peaks in the UK and is classed as a Munro.
The summit sits on the high Cairngorm plateau and gives wide views of neighbouring peaks such as Braeriach and Ben Macdui. Walks to the summit are typically long cross-country routes that traverse plateaus and can involve more than 15 kilometres of travel from the nearest established parking or pathheads.
The peak is a natural feature of the Cairngorm massif and has been recorded on mountaineering lists since the late 19th century as part of Sir Hugh Munro’s compilation. It has no constructed buildings and its significance is as a mountaineering objective and high point on the plateau.
Cairn Toul lies within the Cairngorms National Park in eastern Scotland, on the central high plateau of the Cairngorms range, between the summits of Braeriach and Ben Macdui.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 1,291 metres, making it the fourth-highest peak in the United Kingdom.
- Access: Classified as a Munro - approaches are remote and routes across the Cairngorm plateau are long and exposed.
How to Get to Cairn Toul #
Cairn Toul is a remote Cairngorms peak best reached from the A93 road (the main road through the Dee valley). The usual access is to drive to Braemar and then continue to the Linn of Dee car park (follow the public road past Glen Tanar); from there you set out on a long, unmarked mountain walk across open terrain.
There is no close public transport to the mountain summit-expect a long day-hike or multi-day route from the Linn of Dee car park (many kilometres of mountain walking over rough ground). Ensure you have an OS map and mountain experience before attempting it.
Tips for Visiting Cairn Toul #
- Treat Cairn Toul as a full‑day, navigation‑heavy outing and start very early in summer to make the most of long daylight and to avoid afternoon plateau mist and changeable weather.
- A common access point for ascents is from the Linn of Dee/Lairig Ghru direction-plan logistics accordingly (long approach, remote terrain) and use a map and compass or GPS because paths become indistinct on the high plateau.
- Avoid the busiest periods by going midweek or outside school holiday weeks; hikers who push a little farther from the main approach often find quieter ground and better winter/early‑morning light for views of the surrounding Cairngorm summits.
Best Time to Visit Cairn Toul #
Visit in summer (June-August) for the safest and most accessible conditions for climbing Cairn Toul; other seasons are more challenging and can be hazardous.
