Main image

Cairn na Burgh Beag is a small rocky islet in the Inner Hebrides off the northwest coast of the Isle of Mull, Scotland. It sits a few hundred metres north-east of the larger Cairn na Burgh Mòr and is uninhabited.

The islet is notable mainly for its close association with the larger island and the medieval fortifications there rather than for features on its own surface. Landings are occasional and dependent on sea conditions; there are no permanent facilities.

Historically the pair of islands served strategic roles at the entrance to the Little Minch and the surrounding channels, with fortifications constructed on the larger island to control access. Over time the islands fell out of permanent use and today retain mainly ruins and natural rock features.

Geographically the islet lies in the Sound of Mull / entrance to Loch Tuath area, roughly offshore from the northwest coast of Mull and within the council area of Argyll and Bute.

  • Access: Accessible only by private boat and dependent on sea and weather conditions, with landings usually made from the nearby Isle of Mull.
  • Nearby feature: Immediately adjacent to a larger neighbor that contains visible medieval fortifications, so most historical interest on land is concentrated next door.
