Main image

Caerphilly Castle is a vast 13th-century medieval fortress in south Wales, begun in 1268 by the Anglo-Norman lord Gilbert de Clare. It is famous for its large concentric layout and man-made lakes that functioned as defensive moats.

Visitors can explore the great keep, curtain walls, gatehouses and the extensive water defenses that encircle the site. The castle includes walkable ramparts, towers and courtyards, with interpretive displays and occasional reenactments explaining medieval military and domestic life.

Built in the late 1260s and early 1270s as an aggressive fortification in the Welsh Marches, the castle later fell into partial ruin and has undergone various phases of restoration from the 17th century onwards. Major conservation and restoration in the 19th and 20th centuries stabilized the ruins and opened the site to the public.

The castle stands on the outskirts of the town of Caerphilly in South Wales, roughly 10-12 kilometres north of Cardiff city centre, set within low-lying parkland and lakes that were formed as part of its original defenses.

  • Construction and design: Built from 1268 by Gilbert de Clare, it is one of the largest medieval castles in Britain and notable for its concentric defenses and extensive water-filled moats.
  • Visitor experience: The surrounding water defenses make circuit walks around the castle especially scenic; parts of the site are restored and interpretive displays explain medieval construction and daily life.

What to See #

  • Great keep and inner ward: The large rectangular keep and inner ward form the castle's core fortification and are accessible to visitors who can walk along parts of the curtain walls.
  • Water defenses: A system of artificial lakes and moats created by damming local streams to flood the approaches; these water defenses stretch around the castle and are a defining landscape feature.
  • Outer defenses and gatehouse: The outer gatehouse and concentric rings of curtain walls, towers and baileys that demonstrate the castle's multilayered 13th-century military design.
