Cadillac Ranch
Monument Public art installation of graffiti-covered buried Cadillacs
Cadillac Ranch, just west of Amarillo on Route 66, displays half‑buried Cadillacs nose‑down in a field. Road trippers stop to photograph and spray‑paint the cars as a participatory roadside artwork.
Cadillac Ranch is an outdoor public art installation and roadside landmark in Texas, located along historic U.S. Route 66 near Amarillo. It was created in 1974 and is one of the best-known examples of late 20th century land art in the United States.
The work comprises ten Cadillac automobiles from model years 1949 to 1963 that are half-buried nose-first in the ground and arranged in a straight line. The cars are repeatedly repainted by visitors, forming constantly changing layers of graffiti and color.
The installation was commissioned by local patron Stanley Marsh 3 and constructed by the art collective Ant Farm in 1974. Since its installation it has been maintained as a public, participatory artwork and has become an iconic Route 66 attraction.
