Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake is a freshwater lake and wetland area that straddles the Texas and Louisiana border, known for its flooded cypress and tupelo swamp and labyrinth of bayous.

The landscape is dominated by large bald cypress trees with hanging Spanish moss, narrow waterways and open lake basins; many visitors travel by kayak, canoe or guided boat to navigate the channels and view wildlife. On the shoreline there are boardwalks, boat launches and walking trails at the nearby state park facilities.

The lake and surrounding wetlands take their name from the indigenous Caddo people and have long supported fishing and riverine livelihoods. The area has been managed for conservation and recreation in recent decades, with protected areas and park facilities on the lake margins.

Caddo Lake sits in the piney woods region along the Texas - Louisiana border, surrounded by low-lying forested wetlands rather than urban development. Access points and visitor facilities are concentrated on the lake’s edges where roads reach the water.
