Cacaxtla

Cacaxtla is an archaeological site in the present-day state of Tlaxcala in central Mexico, notable for large, well-preserved polychrome murals. The site’s painted plaster surfaces display figural scenes and iconography that distinguish it from many nearby contemporaneous sites.

The principal attraction is the painted palace and its murals, which include battle and ceremonial imagery executed in vivid pigments. The excavated area contains mound platforms and palace foundations with internal painted rooms that visitors can view.

Archaeological evidence indicates major occupation and construction at Cacaxtla during the Late Classic period, roughly the 7th to 9th centuries CE. The site shows stylistic connections with broader Mesoamerican artistic traditions of that era and has been the subject of conservation and museum work to preserve the painted surfaces.

Cacaxtla is located within the state of Tlaxcala in central Mexico; it is visited as a compact, walkable archaeological park and is managed together with nearby sites and a small museum displaying contextual finds.
