Cabrillo National Monument is located on the western tip of the Point Loma peninsula, approximately 5 miles west of central San Diego by road, overlooking the entrance to San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

How to Get to Cabrillo National Monument #

Cabrillo National Monument sits at the western tip of Point Loma in San Diego. From downtown San Diego it’s about 5-7 miles (15-25 minutes) west via Harbor Drive and Rosecrans Street/Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, then up Cabrillo Memorial Drive to the monument; parking is available at the site. Some San Diego MTS buses and seasonal shuttles serve Point Loma-check SD Parks & Recreation and MTS for current transit and shuttle options.

Tips for Visiting Cabrillo National Monument #

  • Plan tidepool visits around local low-tide times-Cabrillo's tide pools are most interesting and accessible at low tide and many visitors miss them by arriving at high tide.
  • For sweeping skyline and island views, time your visit for late afternoon or early evening; parking fills quickly for sunset, so arrive early or plan a weekday visit to avoid the busiest periods.
  • Check the park website for parking fees, timed-entry notices or road work before you go-Point Loma parking is limited and the main lot is the most convenient starting point for the lighthouse, tidepools and trails.
