Cabañeros National Park

Cabañeros National Park is a protected area in central Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha region that conserves extensive Mediterranean forest and scrubland; it was designated a national park in the 1990s. The park is regionally important for its open oak woodlands, cork oak formations and large open landscapes.

Large raptors and scavenging birds are a highlight, with significant populations of vultures and other birds of prey; mammals commonly observed include red deer and wild boar. The park contains extensive dirt-track routes and lookout points used for wildlife observation and photography.

The national park was created from existing protected land during the late 20th century to conserve the area’s typical Mediterranean ecosystems and large vertebrates. Management has focused on habitat protection and controlled public access to reduce disturbance to wildlife.

The park spans parts of the provinces in central Spain and is accessed from nearby rural towns in Castilla-La Mancha; the landscape is a mix of rolling hills, river valleys and forested plateaus.

• Birdwatching tip: Spring is the best time for raptor and passerine migration; several vantage points and hides exist for birdwatching.
• Access: Visitor centres provide route information and recommended driving loops; much of the park is reached by rural roads and tracks.
