Ca’ d’Oro (Palazzo Santa Sofia) is a mid-15th-century Venetian Gothic palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal, renowned for its richly decorated stone façade and polychrome detailing. The name means “House of Gold,” a historical reference to the building’s former gilded and painted surfaces.
The palace contains the Galleria Franchetti, a museum of paintings, sculpture and applied arts assembled by Baron Giorgio Franchetti and displayed in restored historic rooms and an inner courtyard. Architectural highlights are the loggias and ogee-arched windows that face the canal and define the palazzo’s celebrated exterior.
Built for a leading Venetian family in the 1400s, the palazzo passed through various owners until its late-19th-century restoration and conversion into a public gallery. It sits along the Grand Canal in the Cannaregio sestiere, relatively close to the Rialto area.

How to Get to Ca' d'Oro #
Ca’ d’Oro sits on the Grand Canal in the Cannaregio sestiere near the Rialto; from Piazza San Marco it’s a 10-15 minute walk along the canal’s edge or a two‑stop vaporetto ride. Take ACTV vaporetto lines 1 or 2 to the Ca’ d’Oro stop (Fondamenta Ca’ d’Oro) or get off at Rialto and walk north along the canal for about 600 m.
Tips for Visiting Ca' d'Oro #
- Buy the skip-the-line ticket or combine with other Venetian state museums to save time.
- Enter from the Campo San Samuele side to avoid the canal-side crush and get a quieter first view of the façade.
- Look up: the gilded quatrefoils and lacy stonework on the upper loggia are where the light and pigeons make the building look animated-bring a zoom lens.
