Byōdō-in is a Buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, most famous for its 11th-century Phoenix Hall and Heian-period garden. The site is celebrated for its architecture and landscape design and is part of Kyoto’s set of historic monuments.
The Phoenix Hall faces a pond and is decorated with phoenix motifs; the site’s pond and garden are designed to mirror the hall and create a classical Pure Land landscape. The temple is closely associated with Heian-era art and Buddhist practice.
Byōdō-in was originally a countryside villa of a powerful family that was converted into a temple in the late 11th century; the Phoenix Hall was completed in 1053 and has survived in its historic form. The hall and garden illustrate Heian-period religious architecture and aesthetics.
The temple is located in Uji, about 15 km south of central Kyoto and roughly 20 minutes by local train from Kyoto Station, set beside the Uji River and close to other cultural attractions in the city.

- UNESCO status: Byōdō-in is part of the 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto' UNESCO World Heritage listing; combine a visit with nearby Uji attractions.
