Bygdin is a long mountain lake in the Jotunheimen area of Innlandet; visitors take summer boat crossings, use mountain lodges and start hikes to nearby peaks such as Bitihorn.
Bygdin is a mountain lake in Innlandet county, Norway, situated on the western edge of the Jotunheimen mountain area. The lake is long and narrow, running roughly east-west along a glacially carved valley.
Its length is about 25 kilometers and it functions as a hub for mountain tourism with several historic mountain lodges on its shores and seasonal boat services linking lodges in summer. The lake provides access to hiking routes and crossings into Jotunheimen.
Bygdin has long been used as a transport corridor and recreational area in the high country, with accommodation and trail infrastructure geared toward hikers and mountaineers.
The lake lies within the mountainous interior of southern Norway and is accessed via regional roads from nearby valleys and towns in Innlandet.

How to Get to Bygdin #
Drive from Vågåmo or from the Sognefjord direction via RV 51 and local mountain roads; roads may close in winter. In summer there are scheduled boat crossings on Bygdin that connect trailheads and the mountain lodges; check the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) for timetables.

- Book accommodation at Bygdin Turisthytte or Gjendesheim to use as a base for lake walks and hikes.
- If attempting the Besseggen ridge from Gjendesheim, start very early or late in the day to avoid crowds and to catch the best light.
- Boat crossings across Bygdin are scheduled seasonally-check local timetables in advance.
