Burnham Park (Chicago)

Burnham Park is a public lakefront park in Chicago along the shore of Lake Michigan, named for urban planner Daniel H. Burnham and developed in the early 20th century. It forms a continuous strip of recreational land linking central downtown parks to southern lakefront green space.

The park contains major recreational and civic features running along several miles of the lakefront, including large open lawns, beaches, a marina and stadium facilities. Notable built features within the park include Soldier Field and Burnham Harbor; the lakefront trail through the park is heavily used for walking, running and cycling. The park functions as a linear recreational corridor rather than a single enclosed green.

Planning and landfilling for the park took place as part of Chicago’s broader lakefront development tied to the 1909 Plan of Chicago by Daniel H. Burnham; additional parcels were added and improved through the 20th century. The park has hosted sporting events, large public gatherings and has been altered to accommodate stadiums and harbor facilities.

Physically the park runs along Lake Michigan adjacent to downtown Chicago, contiguous with Grant Park to the north and extending toward Jackson Park to the south. It sits on reclaimed lakefront land and is accessible from multiple CTA and Metra stops in central Chicago.
