Burgtheater

The Burgtheater is Austria’s federal theatre in Vienna, originally established in 1741 and housed in its current building on the Universitätsring since 1888. It is one of the most important stages in the German-speaking theatre world.

The house presents a regular season of plays and repertoire productions spanning classic and contemporary theatre; its programme is a central part of Vienna’s cultural calendar. Audiences see a mix of full-length productions staged on the main auditorium and smaller-scale works presented in the theatre’s alternate spaces.

Founded as the imperial court theatre in the 18th century, the institution moved into the present Ringstraße building in 1888. Over time it evolved from a court company into Austria’s national theatre, maintaining a resident ensemble and repertory tradition.
