Burana Tower

Burana Tower is a large medieval minaret and archaeological site in the Chuy Valley of northern Kyrgyzstan associated with the ancient city of Balasagun. The brick tower is the most visible remnant of a once larger Karakhanid urban centre and stands within an archaeological park with excavated foundations and grave markers.

The site includes excavated foundations, scattered stone balbals and a small museum that exhibits finds from the area. The tower itself has been partially restored and visitors may reach the top for views over the surrounding plain and nearby settlements.

Built in the medieval period as part of a city that served as a regional centre under the Kara-Khanid state, the minaret and surrounding remains document urban settlement and religious architecture in the high steppe and foothill zone. Over time the city declined and the surviving tower became the principal monument preserved on the site.

Burana Tower sits near the town of Tokmok in Chuy Region on the northern edge of Kyrgyzstan’s mountain foothills; it is a commonly visited historic site for travellers based in the Bishkek region.

• Tower height and viewpoint: The surviving minaret stands about 24 metres tall today; it was originally substantially taller before earthquake damage and centuries of weathering. Visitors can ascend a staircase for a viewpoint over the surrounding plain.

• Archaeological museum and park: An on-site small museum and archaeological park that displays finds from the medieval city of Balasagun and fragments of carved stone stelae found in the area.
• Mausoleums and balbals: A collection of medieval stone balbals and the foundations of mausoleums and buildings clustered around the tower within the surrounding plain.
