Bungay Castle
Castle Remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle
Ruined Norman-era castle in Bungay, Suffolk where visitors explore earthworks, a 12th-century motte and riverside walks; local panels and occasional guided tours explain the site’s history.
Bungay Castle is a ruined Norman castle in the market town of Bungay in Suffolk, England. The site occupies a defensive position overlooking the River Waveney.
The visible remains include sections of curtain wall and a prominent gatehouse; the ruins form a compact ensemble that is easily explored on foot. The site is known locally as a historic landmark and is accessed from the town centre.
Construction began in the medieval period and the castle was developed and modified over subsequent centuries before falling into ruin. It has been recorded and conserved as a historic ruin rather than being restored to a complete structure.
The castle stands within Bungay town, in eastern England near the Suffolk-Norfolk border, sited beside the River Waveney and close to the town’s streets and historic centre.
