Bukhansan National Park is a granite mountain national park that straddles northern Seoul and adjacent Gyeonggi Province; it was designated a national park in 1983. The park is known for its steep granite peaks and close proximity to Seoul, making it one of South Korea’s most-visited urban-access wilderness areas.
Hikers can find a network of trails with routes ranging from short valley walks to summit climbs. The park’s highest point, Baegundae, reaches 836.5 metres and offers wide views over Seoul on clear days. Other highlights include steep rock faces used for climbing, forested valleys, and several temples.
The area contains historic mountain fortifications and religious sites that reflect long-term human use. The present protected area was formally established in 1983 to conserve both natural and cultural features, and has since been managed for recreation and conservation.
The park sits immediately north of central Seoul and extends into neighbouring Gyeonggi Province. Trailheads are reachable from multiple subway stations and local bus routes, making the peaks and fortress walls accessible as day trips from the city.
