Mountain Granite mountain park near Seoul popular for hiking
Granite peaks and forested ridges rim Seoul’s northern edge in Bukhansan National Park; hikers follow steep trails to granite summits, historic temples and fortress walls for city views.
Bukhansan is a prominent granite mountain massif and national park straddling northern Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi Province, celebrated for its steep rock peaks and extensive hiking trails. The park’s landscape combines exposed granite cliffs, forested valleys and numerous trails of varying difficulty.
Hikers use a network of paths to reach distinctive summits and viewpoints; the highest point, Baegundae, rises to 836.5 metres and offers panoramic views over Seoul and the surrounding plains. The park also contains well known climbing faces such as Insubong, popular with technical climbers and boulderers.
Historically the mountain area contains sections of defensive walls and gates that once formed part of Seoul’s northern approaches; these remains are integrated into many walking routes. The area was designated a national park in 1983 to protect its natural and cultural features while providing outdoor recreation close to the capital.
The park lies immediately north of central Seoul, with multiple trailheads reachable by public transport from the city; its proximity to the metropolis makes it one of South Korea’s most visited national parks.
