Bui National Park is a protected area in Ghana’s Bono Region that encompasses woodland-savanna and riverine habitats along the Black Volta. The park is known for its populations of hippopotamus and other savanna wildlife.
The park offers river-based wildlife viewing on the Black Volta and supports species typical of the Guinean forest-savanna mosaic, including antelope, birds and primates in parts of the reserve. Boat trips and guided walks are common ways to observe hippos and riverine wildlife.
Established to protect wildlife and riverine ecosystems, the park’s character changed with the construction of the Bui Hydroelectric Dam on the Black Volta, which introduced new infrastructure and altered local habitats.
The park lies along the Black Volta in central-west Ghana within the Bono administrative area, occupying a mix of river gorge, forest and savanna landscapes.
