Buffalo National Park
National Park Former Alberta national park established for bison conservation
Buffalo National Park was a federal reserve in Alberta, Canada, created to conserve plains bison. It was established in 1909 and was closed and delisted in the mid 20th century.
The park was developed as a managed reserve with fenced ranges where bison were introduced and monitored to rebuild populations. Following closure the animals and management responsibilities were transferred elsewhere and the land returned to other uses.
The former park lay in central-eastern Alberta, in the region around Wainwright and neighbouring rural areas. Much of the former park area is now private or municipal land rather than an active national park.
- Status: No longer an active national park; it was a federal reserve established to conserve plains bison and was closed and delisted in the mid 20th century.
- Bison relocation: Many of the bison from the reserve were transferred to other protected areas in Canada following the park's closure, helping re-establish herds elsewhere.
