Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-managed conservation area in southern Arizona established to protect native grassland and desert scrub habitats and the species that depend on them.

The refuge protects large tracts of grassland and desert-scrub habitat used by grassland birds, mammals and native plants, and it has become known for habitat-restoration projects and species recovery efforts. Trails and backcountry roads provide opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching, with early morning and late afternoon being the best times to observe animals active on the refuge.

The refuge was created by the federal government in the 1980s with the primary purpose of preserving remaining Sonoita grassland habitat and supporting recovery programs for regionally threatened species. Management has included grazing agreements, fire management and targeted restoration to maintain native grassland structure.

Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge lies in southern Arizona near the U.S.-Mexico border, within driving distance south of Tucson. The landscape is a mix of grassland, desert scrub and riparian corridors in a largely rural part of Pima County.

  • Conservation focus: Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with programs focused on grassland restoration and species reintroduction, notably efforts to recover the masked bobwhite quail.
  • Visiting tip: Best viewed outside the hottest midsummer months; early morning and late afternoon are prime times for wildlife observation in grassland and riparian areas.
