Buenos Aires Eco-Park
Zoo Urban ecological park on former zoo grounds
Former city zoo in Buenos Aires’ Palermo district, now reconfigured as the Buenos Aires Eco-Park with gardens and conservation programs; visitors come for urban green space and educational exhibits.
The Buenos Aires Eco-Park is an urban ecological park in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires that occupies the former Buenos Aires Zoo, a site originally founded in the late 19th century.
The site covers the zoo grounds within Parque Tres de Febrero and features pathways, landscaped enclosures and several historic masonry and iron zoo structures that date to the original 19th and early 20th century facility. Many exhibits have been reinterpreted to focus on native species, environmental education and conservation programs rather than traditional exotic-animal displays. The park sits near other Palermo attractions including the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales and public plazas, making it a common stop on a cultural walk through the neighbourhood.
The original Buenos Aires Zoo was established in the late 1800s and operated for well over a century. Municipal authorities closed the traditional zoo operation in 2016 and began a staged transformation of the site into an ecopark with the stated aims of relocating nonnative animals and refocusing the grounds on education, conservation and native habitats.
The Eco-Park sits in Palermo within the larger Parque Tres de Febrero greenbelt, near Avenida Sarmiento and Plaza Italia in Buenos Aires. It is inside the city limits and easily reached from central Buenos Aires by public transport.
- Transition from zoo to ecopark: Conversion from a traditional zoo began after the municipal government closed the historic zoo site to the public as a zoo in 2016; the site has since been reworked toward conservation, education and native-species displays.
- Visiting tip: Best visited in the morning when outdoor exhibits and interpretive areas are cooler and quieter, and when city wildlife activity is often higher.
