Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi
Historical Site Ancient stupas and monasteries central to early Buddhism.
Sanchi’s stone stupas and carved gateways in Madhya Pradesh preserve early Buddhist architecture and relief sculpture. Pilgrims and history enthusiasts visit the Great Stupa, carved toranas and the on-site museum.
The Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi are a group of stupas, temples, monasteries and sculptural works on a forested hill in Madhya Pradesh, India, whose core dates to the 3rd century BCE under Emperor Ashoka. The site is one of the best-preserved examples of early Buddhist architecture in India.
The complex is dominated by the main hemispherical stupa with surrounding smaller stupas, monastic remains and stone gateways. The principal gateways are carved with scenes from the life of the Buddha and rich decorative motifs, and other visitors see a network of later temples and viharas spread across the hill terraces.
The original great stupa was commissioned in the 3rd century BCE under the Mauryan emperor Ashoka; substantial sculptural and architectural additions were made between the late 1st century BCE and the early centuries CE. Over time the site served as a major pilgrimage and monastic centre and was conserved and partially restored in successive periods.
Sanchi sits on a low sandstone hill north of the town of Sanchi, in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh. It is approximately northeast of Bhopal and is approached by road from the nearest towns; the monuments occupy the summit and surrounding slopes of the hill.
- Great Stupa dimensions: features a hemispherical dome roughly 36 metres in diameter at the centre of the complex and is flanked by four richly carved stone gateways.
- Site museum and collections: houses an on-site museum where many original sculptures, fragments and inscriptions from the site are conserved and displayed.
What to See #
- Great Stupa (Stupa 1): Located at the heart of the complex, this hemispherical stupa dates to the Maurya period and was enlarged in later centuries; it is ringed by a stone drum and surrounded by later sculpted railings and four elaborately carved gateways dating to the late 1st century BCE and early 1st century CE.
- Toranas (Gateways): Four monumental carved gateways oriented to the cardinal points, executed in sandstone with scenes from the Buddha's life and rich vegetal and animal motifs; they date to around the 1st century BCE-1st century CE.
- Monastic and temple complex: Ruins of monastic buildings, temples and small stupas dating from the early centuries CE, arranged around the main stupa on the hilltop and terraces; remains include vihara foundations and assembly halls.
- Ashokan pillar and sculptured panels: A polished sandstone pillar attributed to Emperor Ashoka and fragments of railings and sculptured panels now in situ or conserved on site.
