Budatín Castle

Budatín Castle is a medieval fortress located at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers in the Budatín district of Žilina, Slovakia; its origins date to the 13th century. The site served as a river-control and defensive stronghold and is a prominent local historic landmark.

The complex houses regional museum displays focused on local history and crafts and includes preserved defensive structures and a riverside park that visitors can walk. Architectural highlights include the surviving towers and the palatial sections that were adapted over the centuries.

The castle was originally constructed in the 13th century as a river fortress and was rebuilt and altered in later medieval and early modern periods to serve administrative and residential purposes. It underwent restorations in the 20th century to stabilize structures and adapt parts of the complex for museum use.

Budatín Castle sits on the outskirts of the city of Žilina in northwestern Slovakia, immediately adjacent to the Váh river where it meets the Kysuca, and is accessible from Žilina’s urban area.
