Bucura Lake is a high-altitude glacial lake in the Retezat Mountains of Hunedoara County, Romania and is regarded as the largest glacial lake in the country. The lake lies within Retezat National Park, an area protected for its glacial landforms and alpine ecology.
Hikers encounter a mountain lake set in a rocky cirque beneath higher peaks, widely used as a destination on marked alpine trails. The area attracts walkers and climbers during the summer season and is valued for mountain scenery and alpine flora.
The lake is a natural glacial feature formed during the last ice age; it has not been subject to major human construction and has long been part of the mountain landscape now protected by the national park.
Bucura sits in the Retezat massif of the Southern Carpathians in Hunedoara County, within Retezat National Park and below some of the range’s higher summits.
