Bryggen
Building Colourful Hanseatic-era wooden wharf and UNESCO site
Bergen’s Bryggen preserves the Hanseatic Wharf’s row of narrow wooden buildings-UNESCO-listed-where visitors explore maritime museums, craft shops and walk the waterfront into nearby fish market and Fløyen funicular.
Bryggen is the historic Hanseatic wharf area in Bergen, Norway, distinguished by its long row of narrow wooden buildings along the inner harbour. It is recognised for its role in Hanseatic trade and for retaining the wooden urban fabric associated with that commercial history.
Visitors encounter the waterfront row of gabled timber houses, small museums that interpret the Hanseatic period, artisan workshops and cafes tucked into the preserved buildings. The tight layout and timber construction are characteristic features that define the visual identity of the wharf.
The site grew from medieval trading activity by the Hanseatic League and continued as a commercial hub for several centuries; fires and rebuilding have shaped the present appearance, with conservation efforts focused on preserving the wooden structures. Bryggen’s material and layout reflect the long association between Bergen and North Sea trade.
Bryggen sits on the eastern side of Bergen’s harbour in Vestland county, immediately adjacent to the city centre and the Vågen inlet. It is a compact waterfront district within walking distance of Bergen’s central transport hubs.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its historic wooden wharf and its testimony to Hanseatic trading activity on the Norwegian coast.
- Photography tip: The timber buildings are narrow and closely packed along the harbour, so early morning light is often best for photography without crowds.
