Bryce Amphitheater
Area Large natural amphitheater of hoodoos in Bryce Canyon
The main amphitheater of Bryce Canyon National Park-the broad bowl of hoodoos viewed from Sunrise and Sunset Points. Visitors arrive for rim hikes, viewpoints and sunrise light on sculpted sandstone.
Bryce Amphitheater is the principal natural amphitheater in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, noted for its dense assemblage of eroded rock spires called hoodoos.
The amphitheater contains thousands of hoodoos and extensive cliff-edge viewpoints; the most visited outlooks are Sunset Point, Sunrise Point and Inspiration Point. A network of short trails and rim paths provides a variety of vantage points and short to moderate hikes.
The landforms were carved from the Claron Formation by frost-wedging, freeze-thaw cycles and stream erosion over geological time, producing the tall, thin pinnacles and narrow fins visitors see today.
The amphitheater sits on the eastern edge of the park near the park’s visitor facilities and the small settlement area often called Bryce Canyon City, in southern Garfield County, Utah.
- Best time to visit: Best light for photography and colour on the hoodoos occurs at sunrise and sunset, when low-angle sunlight enhances the orange and red rock hues.
- Elevation: Rim elevations are generally high - roughly 2,400 to 2,700 metres (about 8,000 to 9,000 feet) - so expect cooler temperatures and rapid weather changes compared with lowland deserts.
