Brúarfoss
Waterfall Icelandic waterfall known for vivid blue waters
A series of short blue cascades on the Brúará river in southern Iceland, Brúarfoss rewards a moderate hike with glacial-fed waters and compact viewpoints along a rugged trail.
Brúarfoss is a small but visually striking waterfall on the Brúará river in Iceland’s Southern Region. It is noted for clear, intensely blue water and a series of braided channels and small cascades rather than a single high drop.
The falls form a low, multi-channeled cascade system with rock and gravel channels that concentrate the vivid water colour at certain viewing points. A short walking trail and viewing areas bring visitors close to the cascades and riverbanks for photography and short walks.
The site has been developed with marked paths and basic viewing points to manage visitor access while protecting the riverbanks. It is frequently included on day trips that visit several natural attractions in southwest Iceland.
The waterfall lies inland in the Southern Region of Iceland, on the Brúará river within the broader Golden Circle tourist area.
- Water colour: The striking blue colour of the water is caused by finely suspended glacial sediments that scatter light, producing a vivid turquoise hue.
- Access and trail: A short marked walking trail and viewpoint provide the main public access; the site is commonly visited as a stop on Golden Circle itineraries.
