Brodick Castle
Castle Victorian country house and historic gardens on Arran
On the Isle of Arran, Brodick Castle sits amid walled gardens and parkland at a ferry terminal. Visitors explore the historic rooms, Victorian gardens and nearby trails up Goat Fell.
Brodick Castle sits on the east coast of the Isle of Arran in Scotland and includes a historic castle, formal gardens and extensive woodland grounds. The estate forms the core of Brodick Country Park and is a major heritage and visitor site on the island.
The property offers a furnished castle with accessible rooms and displays covering the house and estate, plus a visitor centre. The gardens include a restored walled garden and wooded walks that extend down to Brodick Bay over several hectares; walking routes connect to nearby village facilities.
The site has medieval origins with later remodelling and enlargement over successive centuries; surviving fabric and interiors show phases of work from the post-medieval period into the 19th century. The house and grounds have been conserved and opened to the public in the 20th and 21st centuries as a heritage estate.
Located in Brodick on the Isle of Arran, the castle sits on Brodick Bay on Scotland’s Firth of Clyde coast, a ferry ride from Ardrossan on the mainland and a short walk from Brodick village and harbour.
- Ferry access: Regular vehicle and foot ferries link Ardrossan on the mainland with Brodick; timetables vary seasonally so check schedules before travel.
- Best light for photography: Best light for photos is in late afternoon when the castle faces east over Brodick Bay and the low sun catches the gardens and bay.

How to Get to Brodick Castle #
Brodick Castle is on the east coast of the Isle of Arran beside the village of Brodick. From Glasgow drive to Ardrossan Harbour (about an hour by car, roughly 50 km) and take the Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) ferry to Brodick (the crossing is about 55 minutes). From the Brodick ferry terminal it’s a short walk (around 10-15 minutes, about 1 km) along the A841 into the village and up to the castle and grounds.
Tips for Visiting Brodick Castle #
- Take one of the earliest ferries to Brodick from Ardrossan so you have most of the day to explore the castle, walled garden and country park before afternoon visitors arrive.
- Start at the visitor centre on arrival to pick up a map and trail suggestions-many visitors head straight for the house and miss the estate's designed 19th‑century gardens and woodland walks down to the shore.
- If you're a National Trust for Scotland member, present your card at the gate for free entry; otherwise check the castle's daily opening times in advance, since seasonal hours and event closures are common.
Best Time to Visit Brodick Castle #
