Bridewell Palace
Palace Medieval London palace later converted into a prison
A medieval royal residence later converted into a hospital and prison, Bridewell occupies a central London site near Fleet Street; visitors study its Tudor-era history and institutional architecture.
Bridewell Palace was a medieval royal residence in the City of London that later became known as Bridewell Hospital and a house of correction. The palace took its name from the nearby church of St Bride on Fleet Street.
In the 16th century the building was repurposed to serve as a municipal institution for the care and discipline of the poor and vagrant, marking an early example of an urban house of correction. Over subsequent centuries the original palace buildings were altered, replaced or demolished as the City evolved.
Located near Fleet Street and the River Fleet in the historic core of London, the site has been absorbed into the modern urban fabric; surviving references and later institutional buildings preserve the Bridewell name in the area.
The former palace stood within the City of London and was closely connected to the career of the City authorities and royal patronage in Tudor and later periods.
- Change of use: Converted in the 16th century from a royal palace into a hospital and house of correction after being handed over to the City of London.
