Børgefjell National Park
Park Remote Norwegian national park with rugged mountain wilderness
A remote national park on the Norway-Sweden border, Børgefjell is known for jagged peaks, alpine plateaus and reindeer herding; visitors hike long routes, fish clear rivers and seek wilderness.
Børgefjell National Park is a large mountain national park in Norway’s interior established in 1963 to protect high mountain plateaus, valleys and alpine ecosystems. The park is noted for its remote, rugged terrain and sparse human infrastructure.
Visitors encounter wild plateaus, steep valleys and river systems used for hiking, fishing and wilderness recreation; the park is also an active area for traditional reindeer husbandry. Facilities are intentionally limited to preserve the park’s wild character and to support low-impact recreation.
The park was designated to conserve unique mountain habitats and species and to maintain traditional land uses such as reindeer grazing. Management emphasises nature protection alongside sustainable use by local communities.
Børgefjell sits in central Nordland near Norway’s border with Sweden and covers a broad interior mountain area that is distant from major urban centres.
- Access and logistics: The park is remote with limited road access and few marked trails, so visitors should plan logistics and expect backcountry conditions outside managed routes.
- Wildlife and land use: Semi-domesticated reindeer and other Arctic fauna are present, and the area is used seasonally for traditional reindeer husbandry.
