Breithorn
Mountain Alpine peak on the Pennine Alps, popular climb
A four-thousand-metre Alpine peak on the Pennine ridge near Zermatt and Cervinia, often climbed from managed glacier routes. Mountaineers and ski-tourers prize the Breithorn for relatively straightforward snow ascents and panoramic views of surrounding high summits.
The Breithorn is an Alpine massif on the border between Switzerland and Italy with a summit elevation of about 4,164 metres. It is widely known as one of the easier 4,000-metre peaks in the Alps.
A popular objective for skiers and mountaineers, the standard ascent involves a glacier approach from the Klein Matterhorn lift area that reduces the technical and vertical effort. Routes across the Breithorn are commonly done in a few hours from the high cable car stations, making it accessible to fit hill walkers and guided groups.
The Breithorn was first climbed in the early 19th century during the period of Alpine exploration and has since been a standard high-alpine outing in the Pennine Alps. Its accessibility increased with the development of cable cars and ski infrastructure around Zermatt.
The massif sits east of Zermatt in the canton of Valais, forming part of the Pennine Alps on the Switzerland-Italy border. It overlooks the valley of Zermatt and lies near other high peaks including the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.
- Height: 4,164 metres above sea level makes it one of the Alps' accessible 4,000-metre summits reachable by a short glacier approach from nearby lift stations.
- Safety: Climbers normally cross glaciated terrain and commonly use rope teams for crevasse safety even on the standard route.
How to Get to Breithorn #
The usual approach is from Zermatt, Switzerland. From Zermatt take the Klein Matterhorn (Matterhorn Glacier Paradise) cable car to the plateau at 3,883 m; the Breithorn route normally begins from that station. Zermatt is car-free; arrive by train (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn / Swiss Federal Railways) from Visp (about 1 hour from Visp). Book guides and cable‑car tickets in advance during high season.
Tips for Visiting Breithorn #
- If attempting the classic Breithorn ascent, book a certified mountain guide-glacier travel and crevasse risk are real even on 'easy' 4000er routes.
- Take the Klein Matterhorn cable car from Zermatt to 3,883 m and start from the plateau to save time and acclimatize gradually.
- Aim for early morning departures (before 6:00) to avoid afternoon wind and to have firmer snow for cramponing.
- Carry an avalanche transceiver and know basic crevasse-rescue skills; conditions change fast, even in summer.
Best Time to Visit Breithorn #
Best visited in summer for safer glacier travel and stable cable-car service; early mornings minimize wind and soft snow.
