Area Norwegian mountain area with glaciers and high plateaus
Breheimen National Park bridges glacier‑carved valleys and high plateaus in western Norway; activities include glacier trekking, multi‑day hikes and mountain hut routes.
Breheimen is a mountainous region in western Norway that is protected in part as Breheimen National Park, designated in 2009. It covers alpine terrain with valleys and glacier-fed rivers.
The area is used for hiking, mountaineering and backcountry skiing, with a mix of steep peaks and broad valleys. Trails and summer routes link huts and farmsteads, and the landscape includes small glaciers and moraines rather than large urban facilities.
The protected area was established by the Norwegian government to conserve its mountain ecosystems and traditional grazing landscapes. Land use has shifted from local seasonal grazing and small-scale farming to outdoor recreation and conservation management since its designation.
Breheimen sits inland in western Norway, spanning parts of the mountainous interior of Vestland and adjacent counties. The terrain is remote and accessed from regional roads and mountain passes rather than large cities.
- Protection status: Designated as a national park in 2009 and managed to conserve high-mountain habitats and glaciers.
