Brazzaville

Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo, founded in the late 19th century by the French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza and serving as the country’s administrative and political center.

The city offers a riverfront along the north bank of the Congo River, government buildings, markets and cultural institutions that reflect its role as the national capital. Its riverside position provides views across the Congo River to Kinshasa, the capital of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Established in the 1880s during French colonial expansion and named after its founder, Brazzaville later became the colonial administrative center and retained its status as the national capital at independence. It has played central roles in the country’s political and administrative history since the colonial period.

Brazzaville sits on the north bank of the Congo River in central Africa, directly opposite Kinshasa on the south bank; the city’s coordinates place it in the southwestern part of the Republic of the Congo.
