Brauroneion
Archaeological Site Ancient Athenian shrine dedicated to Artemis Brauronia
A small sanctuary to Artemis Brauronia on the Athenian Agora, the Brauroneion preserves architectural fragments and reliefs tied to ancient rites; visitors come for Classical archaeology and temple remains.
The Brauroneion is a small sanctuary on the Athenian Acropolis dedicated to Artemis Brauronia and associated with the cult from the deme of Brauron. It is part of the cluster of Classical-period religious and civic structures on the Acropolis.
The shrine dates to the Classical period of Athens and was connected to rites and dedications relating to Artemis and certain civic cult practices. Architectural traces and foundation remains indicate a modest structure set into the slope of the Acropolis proximate to larger monuments.
Archaeological study has located its remains on the Acropolis near other 5th-century BCE buildings; the site is now part of the broader Acropolis archaeological area visited by scholars and tourists.
Situated on the eastern slope of the Acropolis above the modern city of Athens, the Brauroneion occupies a position among the principal surviving ancient monuments and is reached via the main visitor pathways on the Acropolis.
How to Get to Brauroneion #
Brauroneion sits on the Athenian Acropolis complex near the Propylaea. From central Athens take the Metro to Acropolis station (Line 2) and follow the signs to the Acropolis archaeological site - the Brauroneion area is reached on foot within the main Acropolis circuit (about a 5-10 minute walk from the Acropolis station). By car it is only a couple of kilometres from Syntagma/Square (follow Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street to the main Acropolis entrances).
Tips for Visiting Brauroneion #
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon as the Brauroneion is inside the Acropolis archaeological site and those times avoid the peak tour-operator crowds and the midday heat.
- Enter via the Acropolis ticketed entrance (your Brauroneion visit is included with the Acropolis ticket) so you don't miss the small foundation and information panels that are easy to pass by in a hurried circuit of the hill.
- Spend a few minutes stepping off the main Acropolis route to read the onsite signage and inspect the low ruined foundations - this sanctuary is small and often overlooked by visitors who only see the major monuments.
